Library Week

A room without books is a body without a soul.

Marcus Tullius Cicero

The Indian School-Second Shift observed Library Week from 30 October 2023 to 3 November 2023. The week-long event aimed to promote reading habits among students and encourage them to explore the vast world of literature. The theme for this year's celebration was ‘Read More, Learn More.’

Through the week, various activities were organised to engage students in reading and learning. The School library was decorated with posters and banners promoting the different genres of books.

Students were encouraged to borrow books and participate in a reading challenge. The students of classes 1-4 attended a workshop by painter and author, Ms Bulbul Sharma, where she read extracts from books written by her, like ‘Dance Nani Dance’, ‘Dancing with Birds’ and ‘All time Nature Stories’ by Ruskin Bond. The students of class 5 did a character play of their favourite authors.

Students of classes 6-8 were taken on an excursion to the National Book Trust (NBT), where they engaged in a storytelling session with author, Ms Vinita Zutshi, where she enthusiastically narrated ‘Gupi Gain Bagha Bain’, the legendary children's story written by the best selling Bengali author, Upendra Kishore Roy Chowdhury. Students also bought books from the NBT, where they had a wide variety of genres to choose from. Interestingly, it was observed that students purchased books written in their mother tongues, other than English and Hindi.

A session on books in braille was conducted for the students of classes 9 and 10. School also organised a quiz with several rounds, where the questions were based on different genres of books. The competition showcased a healthy competitive spirit amongst the children, and they thoroughly enjoyed the same.

School also organised a book fair by Full Circle bookstore on 2 and 3 November 2023, where the students could explore and buy books of their choice. The fair had a wide range of books, including fiction, non-fiction, and educational books. The fair was a great success, and many students bought books that they had been wanting to read for a long time. They also participated in a lucky draw.

Library Week helped widely to promote reading habits among students and encouraged them to explore the vast world of literature.
