Lesson in heritage and sustainability at the Feroz Shah Tughlaq tomb in Hauz Khas for class 3 with class 6 mentors

It is not all honour that you take with you but the heritage that you leave behind,

Aptly expressed by Branch Rickey, this thought inspires the present for the future. The repository of archaeological treasures and the incredible monuments that our country is endowed with, motivated us to plan an excursion to this medieval site for class 3. The excursion so planned, not only intended to tell the children the historical relevance of the monument, but also teach the significance that good citizenship plays in our day to day lives.

The young mentors of class 6 aided by their teacher, Ms. Sarita Gupta had earlier read up the history of this monument, which has also been adopted by our School.

Three buses loaded with chirping, excited children left the school premises on the appointed day, ......On reaching the venue, they were gripped by the contrast of the bustle of the city the tranquility at the tomb!

The mentors of class VI set out to explain the historical background and share other basic information about the site to their younger peers. Built in the 14th century, Feroz Shah Tughluqs tomb is located at Hauz Khas. ( literally meaning tank of the special people). In the immediate vicinity of the tomb is a water tank, a mosque and a madrasa. All these structures along with the tomb are referred to as the Hauz Khas complex..

The group walked around and spent time exploring the monument, before sitting down to draw ( or paint) what caught their eye. While some drew the beautiful lake with its swans and ducks, others seemed more intrigued by the ayyats The students had innumerable queries which were answered confidently by their mentors and the resource person of the Archaeological Society of India also present at the site.

The mentors then proceeded on an awareness drive with placards and posters. They did spot interviews with tourists at the place, asking them what they liked about the tomb. The placards and posters with slogans and sketches on conservation seemed to leave a lasting effect on the tourists present there. The young students seemed to bond with their adopted monument too, quite like a mother taking care of its baby!

Last but not least, the students set out to clean up the tomb premises and its gardens as we believe we must be the change we want to see! The children worked enthusiastically and soon, the compound was squeaky clean!

The excursion was an enriching experience and an opportunity to experience cultural and historical legacy. The excursion helped the children to feel a sense of pride of being connected to the heritage of their country.

We headed back to School happily, knowing that our little endeavour to make the younger students more aware about their surroundings had been successful.
