Learning beyond the classroom Pre school excursion to National Bal Bhavan
Exploring and observing makes learning not only concrete but develops interest. So what else is better than a field trip? The Indian School-Second Shift organised an educational trip for Pre school students to National Bal Bhavan on 11 September 2015, aimed at complementing what was being taught in class. The teachers accompanied their respective classes and a group of a hundred students was taken to this one-of-its-kind museum.
The fascinating art and painting display at the entrance captivated the hearts of the children. With a lot in store for them, the little visitors were excited to explore the rest. The walls of the hallways depicted a panorama of Indian diversity, glimpses of our culture, assorted art and craft, rituals and traditions, amongst others. Wow! was a common cry that reverberated as they walked through!

The tiny tots were shown around the place and their anticipation reached its peak when they saw the activity rooms running classes of music, dance, art, book-binding, wood craft, clay- modeling, and puppetry, amongst others. At the Art and Craft Gallery, the children were amazed to see the craft work done, utilising waste material. There was also a room which exhibited the life of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, and our preschoolers were intrigued to see the memorabilia on display.
The aquarium was another attraction where the sight of colorful fish in small aquaria was a treat to the eye for the children. After being charmed by the colourful water world it was time for some relaxation. After making ourselves comfortable in a shaded spot, lunch boxes flipped open for some quick bites that were washed down by cool drinks.
Moving on, the Magic Mirrors' section, with mirrors arranged to reflect distorted and comical images garnered special mention from the children. The children also had fun exploring the mini zoo, the aviary, and the Traffic Park.
And as the hot weather was about to dampen the spirits, the Toy Train came along as the star attraction for the little ones! The students took a joy ride in the toy train, chugging through a tunnel, and over a bridge. With the whistle, smoke and chuff, the train took them around the premises of Bal Bhavan showcasing graffiti on the walls depicting the different states of India and their culture.
After a run-filled 3 hours at Bal Bhavan, finally it was time to board our buses and get back to School. The chatter in the bus was excited and each one seemed to have lots to say! They had obviously been absorbed!
