JUGALBANDI 2020

‘Art is more powerful than the words that are used to bring change’

The Indian School-Second Shift proudly hosted its third edition of ‘Jugalbandi- an annual inter-school competition’ on 24 November 2020. Like every year, it was a magical mélange of music and dance for students of classes 4 and 5 but this year it was celebrated virtually. The theme of the competition was Sustainable Development Goal number 16 focusing on Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions and SDG-4- Quality Education.

  

Students from 20 eminent schools from Delhi and other states participated in the same. The competition showcased ’Rendevouz’ – a dance category which focused on fusing two dance forms to create an amalgamation of artistic expression, whereas the second event consisted of a  fusion song in an Indian and an international language, which were to be blended to share a common notion of peace and justice. 

The video entries received from the participating schools were judged by a distinguished panel of judges who are accomplished individuals in the fields of music and dance. The vocal music was adjudged by Mr Jaywardhan Dadhich, classical vocalist and Mr Neel Ranjan Mukherjee, Hawaiian guitarist. The dances were judged by Ms Richa Joshi, noted  Kathak exponent and Ms Raveena Singh, professional artist in various styles of dance. 

The programme came to close in a virtual closing ceremony held on 24 November 2020. It commenced with the lighting of the traditional lamp followed by a beautifully presented Saraswati Vandana. The gathering was addressed by School Vice-chairperson Dr Mrs Nayana Goradia and Acting Principal, Ms Sukhmeen Kaur Cheema, who appreciated the efforts of all the participants and blessed the occasion. Ms Susan Thomas, Ms Neena Maini, our judges and and other dignitaries graced the occasion and complimented the young performers and their parents for the scintillating performances.

Our students also presented before the viewers, the Dastangoi, a 13th-century storytelling art form, focusing on SDG – 4 Quality Education and embedding the spirit of teamwork along with emphasising on equal education for all. A video focusing on exciting clippings of excellent performances by participating schools was also showcased. The students presented outstanding performances exhibiting their involvement and enthusiasm for dance and music. Also, they could interpret a profound meaning of peace and justice through these art forms. The event concluded with the declaration of results and vote of thanks.

The First Position in the dance category was secured by Air Force Bal Bharti, Lodhi Road, the Second Position by The Indian School-Second Shift and the Third Position by Tagore International School, East of Kailash. A Special Mention Prize was jointly awarded to Delhi Public School, Kalyanpur and Amity International School, Noida.

In the music category, the First Position was secured by Shiv Nadar School, Gurgaon, the Second Position by Sanskaar Valley School, Bhopal and the Third Position by Tagore International School, East of Kailash. Also, a joint Special Mention Prize was awarded to Air Force Bal Bharti School, Lodhi Road and Tagore International School, East of Kailash.

This event, not only brought a great deal of joy for students but also led them one step closer to becoming responsible future citizens striving for sustainability.
