Jal Shakti Abhiyan

Students of The Indian School-Second Shift, exhibited their concern for their environment, in particular that of water by actively participating in the Jal Shakti Abhyaan.

A special assembly was held on 15th July19 where students discussed the prevailing water scarcity problem and issues relating to water security. They were asked to imagine a day without water and students came up with extremely interesting responses. A few were sad, worried, anxious and a few were thinking about scientists working on a project to transport ice from other planets like Neptune and create new sources of water. We need immediate and workable actions on water solutions. Students also came up with many little actions with a potential of making huge difference, such as saving water from RO waste water outlets and using buckets to bathe instead of a shower and rain-water harvesting to name a few. They also watched a video message from on the occasion of the Abhiyan.

Students across the school were engaged in various activities like rhymes session, essay writing, poster making and slogan writing . [gallery link="none" ids="20581,20578,20567"]

Students of class VI,VII and VIII walked about the School campus to observe how rain water harvesting is done on campus. They were accompanied by their Science teacher, Ms Rukshana Khan who demonstrated how rain water is harvested and stored.

The amount of rainwater that is collected depends on the roof area, size of the tank and the rainfall. Students were encouraged to find out and monitor the volume of rain water collected. They also learned how the pipes and pits need to be maintained so that the water flows into the aquifer and thus raises the water table.

Ms Khan explained the system to the students. She showed them the components of the rainwater harvesting setup- roof, PVC gutters, down pipes, first rain separator, leaf trap, filter, storage tank and overflow pipe. Students were taken on the field to observe these important components and to spread awareness about the same amongst their peers.

There was a detailed discussion on water quality checking and water quality treatment followed by a pledge taken by the students to conserve water in every little way they can.
