International Day of Yoga
"In this century we realise that Yoga has united the world." PM Narendra Modi
An invaluable gift of ancient Indian tradition, Yoga has emerged as one of the most trusted means to boost physical and mental well-being. The word "Yoga" is derived from the Sanskrit root "yuj" meaning "to join", "to yoke" or "to unite", symbolising the unity of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfilment; harmony between human and nature and a holistic approach to health and well-being.
On 21 June 2023 “International Yoga Day” was observed by The Indian School-Second Shift with great enthusiasm. All the students participated in various activities throughout the day. The foremost priority was to provide a holistic approach to the health and well-being of the student by keeping a healthy balance of mind and body.
In pursuit of the above, on the occasion, the students of Pre School to class 2 participated in a special yoga session. Various sets of asanas and breathing techniques helped provide targeted benefits for the body and the mind. The young ones engaged in warm-up exercises and performed various sitting and standing asanas like the Tadasana, Vajrasana, Balasana etc.
The students of classes 3 to 5 energetically performed 12 poses of the dynamic Surya Namaskar. Students also learned that besides being a great cardiovascular workout, it also has many other benefits. Psychologically, Yoga regulates the interconnectedness of the body, breath, and mind, making one calmer and boosting energy levels.
The students of classes 6 to 10 especially felt that yoga and meditation helps them not only coordinate the body and mind but also enhances their concentration power. Along with dynamic Surya Namaskar, they learnt and practised yogic asanas like the Dhanurasana, Chakrasana, Sarvangasana and many more, all aiming at better movement and body and mind coordination.
“Yoga is not for only one – it’s for everyone, Yoga is not for a day- it’s for every day.” The schools being convergent centres can play a path-breaking role in the growth and development of the nation. Realising this, The Indian School-Second Shift has already included yoga in its curriculum for all classes and students have been encouraged to do asanas every day. Regular practice of yoga will surely help our students achieve a better life, physically, mentally and spiritually.
