The students of classes 4 and 5 were delighted to attend an insightful session with the Chairman of our School, Mr Prafull Goradia, who spoke on one of India’s greatest heroes, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. The occasion was the Sardar's 145th birth anniversary on 31st October. Since 2014, the date is observed as National Unity Day.
The session commenced with sir introducing Sardar Patel as the great nationalist who played the leading role of bringing about the integration of the numerous princely states into a united independent nation. Goradia Sir also wove the series of events from the Sardar’s childhood as an amazing story and also shared pictures of the same. Sardar Patel, he said, was a man of his words. His childhood was very humble, but it showed signs of his strong character and will.
Sir began by telling the students that the Sardar's full name was Vallabhbhai Jhaverbhai Patel and he was born in Nadiad, a small town in Gujarat. In 1947, when the British left India they offered the Indian princely states, the choice to, either join India or Pakistan. Alternately they could choose to remain independent.
The students were told that Hyderabad was one state which opposed the idea of a merger with India. Sardar Patel who was Deputy Prime Minister at the time, who took a critical decision and ordered police action in Hyderabad.
Mr Goradia shared that the Sardar was Home Minister during the political integration of India and the Indo-Pak War of 1947. It was at this time that Patel persuaded almost every princely state to accede to India. His commitment to national integration in our newly born country was sincere and uncompromising, earning him the title “Iron Man of India”.
After a fascinating journet through Sardar Patel’s life, the students were encouraged to ask questions. The session progressed with sir responding to the questions with sagacity. In the end, a power point presentation was shown to the students which summarised the talk.
The audience enjoyed the session thoroughly and left the meeting with a rich learning experience and looking forward to another similar interaction.
