Importance of Motor Skills in the Overall Development of a Child
A webinar was conducted on 27th November 2020 by Dr Satyaki Sengupta, Deputy Director, Allied Health Specialities, KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital, Singapore, on the importance of motor skills in the overall development of a child.
Dr Sengupta familiarised everyone with the motor milestones and explained the categories of motor development i.e. fine motor development and gross motor development.
This platform focused on the education of children with special needs and slow learners. We realised that the educator and technology are both essential for the growth and development of the children. Dr Sengupta shared various resources to assess and comprehend a child’s true potential. He explained ‘Neurologic Disorder’ and its symptoms. He even talked about the needs of infants and toddlers with developmental delays and disabilities and their families. He spoke on orthopedics conditions like complex hip disorders, limb deformity, neuromuscular disorders, spinal deformity and Perthes Diseases.
He also shared his understanding of the knowledge and skills required for teachers in teaching various subjects. With the development of fine motor skills, a child is able to complete an important task such as writing, feeding oneself, buttoning and zipping. Little hands need to develop dexterity and strength.
