Excursion to the School eco park

On 18 January 2019, students classes 5-8 of The Indian School-Second Shift visited the School eco park. A group of 43 students accompanied by 4 teachers left School at 8.15 am. The journey from the manic metropolis to the quiet of the country was a revelation for our city-bred children! On arrival at the park, the students were delighted to see the sight of a cloud dipping low over an expanse of foliage. Rows of carefully cultivated beds laden with tender vegetables was indeed a feast for the eyes. The students were soon segregated into groups of four under an coordinating activity teacher organising sessions of drawing, science, social connect and poetry. The science activity entailed picking up samples of soil from different parts of the park to check for PH. The group also demonstrated sedimentation in a glass jar. Another group tried its hand at sowing spinach and coriander saplings in the field. They interacted with the maalis to know more about the soil and the types of crop that do well in it. The excursion was incomplete without assimilating the spectacle in art and verse! The children thus spread themselves under the winter sun and gazed at the surroundings to assimilate the freshness and simplicity as drawings and poems. Some students painted the panorama too. The sports enthusiasts quickly got down to a game of volleyball and football even as the nature lovers strolled around the park and observed the farm animals. Last but not the least the children assembled near the vegetable beds for picking. In squeals of delight, they spotted and picked the fresh produce to carry home. There were carrots, sweet potato, cauliflower, turnip, radish, spinach and eggplant ready to be picked. Thus ended a richly packed morning of education in entertainment.
