English language workshop 'Fun With Spellings'

On Monday, 25th September, 2017, an informative workshop on spellings, Fun With Spellings was conducted by Hindustan Times resource person, Ms. Anuradha Majumdar. Ms. Majumdar is a professional interpreter and a translator. She has also been a teacher for almost 40 years.

The session started with an interactive exercise in language. The children were thrilled to learn that 'ed' has three phonic sounds. Thereafter, the children were told about the rules to be applied when using 'ed' and ' ing'. What made the workshop more engaging were the visuals used to explain the rules.

The colourful alphabets were divided into two groups and children were asked to find the common characteristic of all the alphabets in each group. The first group had letters with 'sticks' ( b d f h k l t) and the second one had letters with 'tails' (g j p q y). Siddid Khati of class 4 promptly pointed out the correct difference between the two and his logical observation was acknowledged by a loud round of applause!

In a nutshell, it was a very well-crafted and age specific workshop that reinforced the rules to be followed whilst learning the spellings of new words in English.
