English Language Teaching workshop
“It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge.” -Albert Einstein
A workshop was conducted for the teachers of The Indian School- Second Shift on 20th March 2023 from 12.30 pm to 2.30 pm in the School auditorium by Ms Sutapa Basu, author, noted for her works like Dangle, Padmavati and Genghis Khan.
Ms Basu presided over the session wherein she stressed on the need to understand the functions of the English language and strategies to develop language skills amongst students through storytelling and poetry.
The workshop was very interactive and comprised of various activities, which the teachers can incorporate in classroom learning. The objective of these activities is to enhance the learner’s language skills.
Ms Basu discussed about how we can evolve poetry skills in students to draw out emotions which in turn help enhance expression that young learners otherwise find difficult to express. She also discussed how poetry can act as a bridge to discuss intense issues. She also emphasised on how to engage the audience by narration and then asking questions in an effective way.
The speaker then narrated a story, 'The Emperor and the Nightingale', and explained how storytelling can be a powerful tool to develop language learning. Since stories are the easiest way to engage young learners, they unconsciously develop multiple skills, such as listening, speaking, vocabulary and phonetics, structure and grammar.
The workshop was very productive as the participant teachers learnt numerous innovative ways to enhance the skills of narrating a story in the class and to use poetry, which would function to enhance not only listening, speaking, reading and writing skills of the learners, but also develop the ability to infer, interpret, and critically analyse.
