Dussehra is a celebration of the power of unity, goodness and the ultimate defeat of darkness. It is also known as Vijayadashami in some regions of India. The values fostered by this festival are that truth wins over lies, good wins over evil and light wins over dark. This year, Dussehra was celebrated on 24 October, 2023.
To define the significance of the occasion, various artistic activities were conducted in classes Pre school-X. A special assembly for classes 6 to 8 was held on 18 October.
Music is vital link that goes beyond the different ages, generations, and genders. It connects people to their roots. The Pre school and Pre primary children were taught the song, "Ram bade veer the" and were guided with Raavan related craft. Trough a storytelling session, students discovered the significance of celebrating this festival with great enthusiasm and dedication.
The students of classes 1-3 participated in the festivity with songs pertaining to the festival, making them feel energetic and happy. They curated various scenes of the festival using various art forms.
Students celebrated the victory of good over evil in an environmentally friendly manner. They prepared a small eco friendly effigy of Ravana using recycled bottles and balloons. Each balloon had an emotion written on it, for example, greed, anger, pride etc. Students pierced the balloons with pencils, signifying that truth and goodness always destroy negative emotions. The students were shown an audio visual clip showing how the demon Mahishasur was vanquished by Goddess Durga.
The students of class 4 to 6 learnt bhajans as a way of learning about the message underlying the celebration of this auspicious festival. It is believed that Vijayadashami is the propitious time to start learning new skills, bhajans being foremost among them, as Goddess Saraswathi herself is seen holding a veena.
Furthermore, students of classes 5-8 presented skits on the occasion to convey the message of the festival in the form of a nukkad natak.
Classes 7 to 10 indulged in the art of storytelling through musical narration. This time-honoured tradition of beginning classes on this note helps bring an element of seriousness and commitment into practice.
The students of class 9 drew Goddess Durga using Mandala Art which in turn focused on their artistic development and promoted emotional well being.
The students of class 6-8 conducted an assembly on the occasion of Dussehra on 18 October, 2023. The students of class 6 enacted the main characters of Ramayana to share the essence of the epic with their peers.
The students of class 7 presented a poem while the students of class 8 presented a melodious song- “Vijay hue Shri Ram aaj”. They were shown videos on the theme and the celebrationconcluded with the thought - ' Victory of Good over Evil.'
Even though Dussehra is celebrated differently in different parts of the country, the common theme is the victory of good over evil. It is one of the very important and auspicious festivals celebrated in India.
