DOE exhibition on teaching Math innovatively

A two-day teaching-learning material (TLM) exhibition was conducted for the primary, middle, secondary and senior secondary levels on 14 and 15 September 2023, titled 'Maths is Fun', by Delhi government school teachers at the Thyagraj Stadium. The aim of the exhibition was to make it possible to eliminate the fear of Math among school students at large. Ms Atishi Singh, Delhi's Education Minister, inaugurated the event.

The initiative by the Directorate of Education attracted the participation of approximately 9,800 teachers, including assistant teachers, TGTs, and PGTs, from over 1,000 Delhi government schools. Ms. Garima, Ms. Tincy and Karmendra Bhardwaj of The Indian School-Second Shift took part in the exhibition on 15 September 2023.

A national Mathematics TLM Competition was held, which encompassed primary, middle, secondary, and senior secondary categories, spanning zonal, district, and state levels. The finalists of the competition also presented their works at the exhibition. The government school teachers  presented various innovative ideas by utilising waste materials and eco-friendly resources to make for a happy classroom for students. Numerous teachers and students from various schools across Delhi were present to view the exhibits. The variety of TLMs showcased at the exhibition included Mathematical Games, Learning with Fun, Magical Boxes, Magic Book, Maths Fun, Geo Board, Maths Magic, Geometrical Park, Maths in Seconds, Strings, and more, all with the sole aim of making  learning the subject more engaging and enjoyable.

The participants explained the TLMs which can be effectively used to make complex topics in Mathematics such as Conic Sections, Trigonometric Functions, Properties of Circle and Arithmetic Progressions, easy to understand. Teachers also presented teaching resources on the Pascal Triangle and Fibonacci Numbers, Strongest Polygon Model, Model of the Eiffel Tower & the Electric Pole with the help of triangles, toothpick sticks etc.. They showcased new ideas to teach Mathematics in the classroom with fun and in a play-way method.

Various interactive teaching aids were also displayed keeping in mind individual differences and inclusive education. A few TLMs catered to the needs of specially abled children. The models  would not only enable the students to comprehend concepts but would also enable teachers to assess their understanding through related models such as quiz boards.

The exhibition was truly an enriching experience for all the educators as it helped them discover innovative methodologies to transact classroom curriculum.  Through the implementation of such activities, students would 'learn by doing' and would be able to apply the concepts in real life scenarios.
