Classes 6 and 8 visit Humayun's Tomb

“Monuments are the grappling-irons that bind one generation to another."

Joseph Joubert

The students of classes VI and VIII visited the Humayun’s Tomb on 23rd February 2024. The magnificent tomb was commissioned by the great Mughal emperor Humayun’s first wife, Hamida Banu Begum in 1562 AD. The first ever garden-tomb of the Indian subcontinent, which inspired the construction of the spectacular Taj Mahal, inspired the young students to explore more. They learnt that the monument was designed by Mirza Mirak Ghiyath. The red sandstone and white marble was used in huge quantities for the first time in the construction of this monument.

The students first took a heritage walk in the Humayun's tomb complex which consists of five monuments. Among them is the Isa Khan Nyazi mosque and tomb. It was absolutely remarkable to see the use of red and yellow sandstone, white and black marble and six-sided stars which were seen as auspicious cosmic symbols in almost every monument at the complex.

Students then witnessed the majestic Humayun's tomb, standing on a seven-meter-high plinth, square in shape and was surrounded by chaar bagh. It was indeed amazing to see one of the finest Mughal garden tombs in India, known for its architectural styles and gardens.

The students appreciated the beauty of the Mughal architecture and learnt that they should conserve national heritage. The heritage walk was a wonderful learning experience for the students as they returned more aware, confident and responsible with values of sharing, caring and team spirit imbibed stronger in their character.

After viewing the architectural marvel, the students indulged in a few fun activities like playing chess, painting the monument, singing, etc. It was an informative and fun filled educational excursion for the young students and an enriching experience for the curious minds. It enlightened all the students about the glorious past of India.
