Classes 5-8 visit the Delhi Book Fair
“Books are like magic, and this book fair is where the magic happens.”
Book fairs are a book lover’s paradise, full of opportunities to discover new reads, meet authors, and connect with fellow bookworms. Apart from promoting literacy and reading habits, especially among children and youth, the objective of book fairs is to fulfill the need of modern society, which is to be informed, aware and updated.
Every year, Delhiites get the opportunity of visiting and participating in the celebrated Delhi Book Fair. The 27th edition of the Delhi Book Fair, being organised by the India Trade Promotion Organization (ITPO) at Pragati Maidan from July 29 till August 2, 2023, coincides with the ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav' and the G20 Summit. The theme of the fair is ‘Books in Nation Building,’ emphasising the importance of books as a source of knowledge, skills, and wisdom for the development of human civilisation.

Students of The Indian School – Second Shift, of classes 5 to 8, got the opportunity to visit the Delhi Book Fair, accompanied by their teachers, Ms Harshita Sharma and Mr Rupinder Singh, on 1 August 2023 . The students explored an extensive collection of books across different genres and subjects. The variety of books, especially on the theme of the book fair, allowed students to discover and explore different genres and points of view, and expand their horizons. School Librarian, Ms Sharma guided the students through the trip to find the books of their favourite genres. Students were attracted by the Percy Jackson series, by Rick Riordan, and most of the children bought parts of these series. Books with 3D illustrations and magical realism also drew their attention. Sudha Murthy remained a happy choice of the children. They purchased various books by her. Some students bought Mandala Art books, a couple of them bought Bad Friends by Claire Seeber. Books by Enid Byton, like The Secret Seven and Famous Five, and collections of short stories by Ruskin Bond were also major attractions for the pupils. Students showed interest in various genres, some were attracted by suspense thrillers, some by comedy, few by artistic books, whereas others by detective novels! The students also got copies of Pratiyogita Darpan as gifts from Upkar Prakashan's stall. The wide range of books let the children dive into the world of literature.
They also visited the various interesting stalls, where they saw and participated in engaging activities. For instance, they were entertained at the stall by ‘Kores’, which exhibited the making of clay and craft items. The clay they were using was non- toxic and non drying. They also delved into the different stalls of attractive stationery. It was an amazing and informative excursion for the students.
Books play a crucial role in nation-building, imparting knowledge, skills, and wisdom, shaping responsible citizens, and contributing to the progress and advancement of the country and it is a must for the learning and growing minds - our future - the students of our country.
