Classes 3 to 9 celebrate the enduring principles of Lord Buddha
Buddha Purnima commemorates the birth of prince Siddhartha Gautam, who became Gautam Buddha and founded Buddhism. It is observed as a day for reflection on the core principles of Buddha’s teachings- peace, compassion, and enlightenment. The festival offers a chance to spread the message of peace and harmony. On the occasion of Buddha Purnima, classes 3 to 9 at The Indian School-Second Shift participated in various activities.
Students of classes 3 and 4 enjoyed a storytelling session, where the teacher narrated interesting stories from Gautam Buddha's life. They watched animated short films, which showcased incidents from the life of the Buddha, and his evolution from a prince to a monk. Later, the students also made posters to mark the day, followed by a classroom discussion reflecting on the teachings of Buddha.
The students of class 5 engaged in creating Buddha-themed artwork, such as drawings, paintings etc., to express their creativity and learn about Buddhist symbolism. Also, an interactive session was held on the Buddha's life and teachings, where the knowledge of the children about Gautam Buddha was put to test, and they learnt new facts.
Following a discussion about the enduring significance of Lord Buddha's teachings in the twenty-first century, the students of classes 6 and 7 penned down their thoughts on why there is a need to promote and attain universal harmony and peace. They also contemplated the significance of inner peace and discussed the benefits of meditation for students.
In classes 8 and 9, students engaged in a peaceful meditation session to embrace mindfulness and tranquility. Mindfulness helps students learn self-management skills, and improves students' executive functioning, including effortful control, working memory, and emotion regulation.
This activity was followed by a creative poster-making activity to express their understanding of Buddhist teachings and values.
Buddha Purnima is an important festival as it commemorates the life of Buddha, celebrates his teachings, promotes cultural unity, and highlights the relevance of his teachings in modern times. Buddha's teachings on wisdom, concentration, and discipline are still relevant in the contemporary world, and the celebration of this occasion at School provided the students an opportunity to reflect on these teachings and how they can be applied in our daily lives.
