Students learn best when they can see, hear, and experience things first-hand. Multi-sensory learning is an important part of school life and school trips respond to all five senses. Keeping this in mind, an excursion to the Lotus Temple was organised on 27 October 2023 for the students of classes 1 and 2.
The Lotus Temple, also known as the Bahai House of Worship is an outstanding piece of architecture, and is an internationally recognised symbol of diversity and peaceful co-existence. The complex reflects a fusion of Indian and Islamic motifs with some striking European touches in its architecture. Shaped as a lotus with white petals, this place of worship does not allow ritualistic ceremonies and has no fixed pattern of conducting worship. A glorious symbol of global harmony, the temple celebrates the oneness of religions. Believers are welcome to gather here to pray, worship, and read their scriptures.
Upon reaching, the little ones were greeted warmly by the volunteers at the temple. A representative told the students about the significance of the temple. The volunteers sang a beautiful prayer and the students were captivated by the chanting.
From here, the little ones gathered in the central prayer hall. Representatives enriched the students with some interesting facts about the temple. The young ones were awestruck to see that the structure is made up of 27 free-standing marble petals arranged in clusters of three, to form nine sides, with nine doors opening onto a central hall with a height of about 40 metres and a capacity to hold 2,500 people.
The huge temple uses solar power and is fitted with a glass and steel skylight. All this helps make the building sustainable as it lets in plenty of natural light.
Next, the students were taken to the auditorium to see a short movie from the ‘Uncle Hathi’ series. Seeing the value-based film made the students empathise with the story characters and comprehend their actions.
Soon, it was time to board the bus and head back to School. It was an enlightening experience for each one of us as we witnessed the beauty of this iconic temple amidst its serene surroundings.
