CBSE teacher workshop in the Social Sciences
A two-day capacity building programme was conducted by CBSE for social science teachers at its head office in Patparganj on 27th and 28th April, 2023. The programme was conductedd by CBSE resource person, Dr Ajay Jha. Teachers of many schools from all over the capital were invited to participate in this programme.
Ms Sandita Paul of The Indian School – Second shift participated in this programme.
The programme emphasised on the latest syllabus for classes IX & X in the subject. The topics which were discussed at length were assessment and evaluation techniques, effective teaching methodology and approach, awareness about the deleted topics and sub-topics, assignment methods, the guiding principles of selecting teaching methods, the use of Information and Communication Technology in social science classrooms, educating students on the guidelines of the NEP 2020, usage of CBQ patterns and multiple intelligence while designing question papers, discussion of sample paper pattern, creation of map-making skills in students, introducing the differentiation between concept and mind-mapping, using field study methods, imparting experiential learning strategies, preparing students for board project work on given topics, revision techniques and following the CBSE instructions thoroughly.
Apart from these academic skills, other social skills like the broader goals of teaching social science subjects, principles of determining core social science content, including local knowledge and flavour in the curriculum, incorporating the development of constitutional values while spreading awareness amongst students about fundamental rights and fundamental duties, setting up of a ‘Heritage Club' at school, qualities of a social science teacher and effectiveness of teaching social science in our societies, were also discussed. Most importantly, the teaching of social science with special emphasis on 21st century skills, which include 3 Ls – Learning Skills, Life Skills and Literacy Skills, was the highlight of the session.
Individual handouts were given to the teachers as resource material for their reference and CBSE affiliated certificates were handed out to every teacher on the successful completion of the session.
Overall, it was a very valuable experience for the teacher community.
