Bound up the Beanstalk with Jack

Can beans make wishes come true? Well, yes they can and do in Jack and the Beanstalk. As a part of Environment Week ( 13th to 17th July15) activities at The Indian School-Second Shift, the Preschool teachers staged a puppet show around the traditional fairytale Jack and the Beanstalk. Besides creating awareness about nature and the environment, the idea behind the puppet show was to both entertain the students of as well as to encourage the development of creativity and imagination among them.

The little ones had their thinking caps on tightly, as they curiously watched Jack steal the giants golden goose and harp! They patiently watched and wondered if Jack would be eaten by the giant before he made it down the beanstalk. This wonderful read-aloud puppet show brought the much-loved classic to life and was a huge success, as the tiny tots participated in a unique combination of storytelling and puppetry. The puppet show concluded with a quick round of questions and answers based on the story itself, followed by a rhyme. As follow up, students of all five sections of the class planted their magical bean seeds to eventually observe the plant as it grows and changes over a period of time. Planting beans ( seed germination) and talking about what they need to grow was an fun activity after the puppet show. It was terrific to watch the little ones grow their own beanstalks, to help them climb to their castles! Apart from a great start to Environment Week, it was extremely reassuring to watch 'growth' taking place in the classroom as well as in the garden pots! Ms. Kritika Negi.
