Baisakhi Celebrations

“Come, rejoice and celebrate this day of Baisakhi with love and excitement. Happy Baisakhi”

Vaisakhi, also pronounced Baisakhi as well as Basoa marks the first day of the month of Vaisakh and is traditionally celebrated annually on 14 April. It is seen as a celebration of the spring harvest primarily in Northern India.

On 13th April 2023,  the students of The Indian School – Second Shift celebrated the festival of  Baisakhi in high spirits. Well planned activities to acquaint the students with this harvest festival were carried out in the classrooms at all the levels. The  activities were conducted to share the significance of the festival  in our culture and to engage them in the celebration of a harvest festival.

Our Pre choolers used their creativity to make bubble wrap prints of maize  (the harvested crop). The children also learned facts about the festival.

The Pre Primary students were informed about the significance of the festival of Baisakhi and engaged in a Baisakhi-inspired sponge-dabbing activity.

The students of class 1  participated in art integrated activities to commemorate the harvest festival by drawing the dhol, kites and crop on A-4 size sheets. The tiny tots danced to Punjabi folk songs.

The pupils of class 2 enjoyed sharing their Baisakhi experience with their peers. They were excited to make beautiful craft which helped them learn about the different aspects of the festival.

Students in classes 3 and 4 enthusiastically participated in the Baisakhi activity by  using a variety of painting methods, including sponge painting and dot painting. They were also taught about the values that come with Baisakhi, vis., gratitude, sharing and community camaraderie. The students gained a better understanding of the significance of the festival and why it is celebrated.

Class 5 crafted kites that represented the festival. This was followed by a class discussion on the history and traditions of various harvest festivals.

The activities were consciously designed to nurture the students' curiosity to know about Baisakhi and to stimulate their creative skills in gaiety.
