Annual Exhibition 2018 on the occasion of Independence Day

The Annual Science Exhibition on 28 July 2018, focused on ingraining a scientific and creative attitude in the young students to make them comprehend the interdependence of science, technology and society, with a hands on experience. After what what better can free our countrymen from the shackles of poverty and deprivation, than strides of science and progressive thought! Skilfully woven into the exhibits was the theme- Sustainability .

Spectacular displays of functional models, informative diagrams and charts, with live demonstrations showcased the scientific temper of our young scientists.

It was a surreal experience as students embarked on a mission to unravel the mysteries of science even as they celebrated the richness of the culture and heritage of the states along the east coast of India. The exhibition was an amalgamation of different aspects of STEAM learning ( Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths) along with a cultural extravaganza showcasing the states along the east coast of India and the Literary Week activities. They wondrously wove a single colourful canopy in the Foundation Hall.

The afternoon began with an inauguration ceremony, which started with a devotional song followed by a musical depiction of the famous fable, The Ants and the Grasshopper by students of class II.

Next, Sarthak Ghosh and Dhairya Saran of class VI presented a Dastangoi Muniyaa ko Diarrhoea khaye jaat hai! . Dastangoi is a 13th century Urdu story telling art form. The students based it on the importance of personal hygiene and sanitation. Their performance was much appreciated by one and all.

This was followed by a Nukkad Natak depicting the theme- Say no to plastic pollution. Advisor, Ms. Susan Thomas addressed the parents and shared that most exhibits were made of waste material and not a single new chart paper had been purchased! Truly the mantra of the 4 Rs was practiced in word and action by the School proving aptly that we believe in Sustainability.

The hall was filled with a palpable pulse of energy as the students demonstrated the energy efficient technologies at the School . The students demonstrated the working of a 3D printer, a sound sensor motor car and showed how a coating of a reflective paint on the glass windows and roof tops can help bring down the temperature of the school building.

The students of class V created a mini magical world of Harry Potter. Once the parents entered the cave and recited the magic spell, they were shown magnificent magical tricks.

Another section depicted the importance of spices and kitchen herbs. The students of grade IV displayed different medicinal plants and explained how some spices help in strengthening the energy centres of our body known as chakras.

Another highlight of the exhibition was a display using Eco Bricks. An ecobrick is a plastic bottle stuffed solid with non-biological waste to create a reusable building block. Eco-bricks are used to make modular furniture, garden spaces and full-scale buildings such as schools and houses. The students with the help of their teachers assembled structures like a toy train and a garden table with stools. A small wall was also constructed using clay and eco bricks to show how it can be used as a building block.

Two of the greatest challenges of the 21st century are-to satisfy energy demands and to mitigate the threat of climate change.. To check climate change we have to focus on nuclear and renewable technologies, while Indias per capita consumption of energy needs to go up by 6 to 8 times before she can become a developed and strong economy.

Keeping this in perspective, Aryan Panda of class VA, prepared a sustainable model of a smart home, which had features of waste management, grey water recycling, energy efficient devices and use of renewable sources of energy.

The entire hall was abuzz with activity. Classes PS VII also had their holiday homework on display. The students demonstrated a variety of experiments for their parents with their skills.

To keep our parents entertained, at intervals, students of classes 4,5 and 6 staged a play on Tenali Raman, Dastangoi, and a Nukkad Natak.

The Exhibition was a huge success. It provided the students a platform to express their creativity, gain confidence and aspire to take initiatives for protecting the environment and creating awareness in our community. Enthusiasm and effervescence overflowed amongst students, their teachers and parents!
