'Safer Internet Day' activities across the classes
“The internet could be a very positive step towards education, organisation and participation in a meaningful society.”— Noam Chomsky
Internet is a channel of networks that connect people across the globe. In the era of globalisation people rely directly or indirectly on technology and most importantly, on the internet, which plays an irreplaceable part in our daily lives.
The internet has completely reduced distance, minimised all limitations and made our world a smaller place. It has brought information to our doorsteps at the click of a button and revolutionizlsed the computer and world of communication like never before.
It has made possible man’s access to countless websites, information programmes, scientific discoveries, global political, social, economic and cultural developments and happenings, libraries, entertainment and much more. In the education sector, learners can coordinate projects with classrooms all over the globe. Though the internet has many advantages it should be used with care.
In light of the above, Safer Internet Day was observed across the classes of The Indian School-Second Shift, to make our young learners aware of the responsibility to use online technology and mobile phones safely.
The students of Pre School and Pre Primary were informed about using the internet cautiously. A presentation was shared about the different usages of the internet such as, to learn, to shop, play games and connect with friends. They were also told about internet predators, identity thieves, and others online who may try to harm. Students then made a poster on the theme, Safer Internet Day.
Class 1 students observed the occasion by discussing ‘how photos can be shared in the safest way possible.’ They were informed that how, within a few minutes, a photo can be shared with thousands of people online. They were also told that for secure photo sharing, they must use the privacy option on different social media platforms.
The students of classes 2 and 3 were shown a video to create awareness about the safe use of the internet. They too made posters. The classes discussed the way of using technology responsibly, respectfully, critically and creatively. Students made wristbands and fliers with captions cautioning wearers about using the internet only under parental supervision.
Class 4 students made presentations on the pros and cons of using the internet, as well as, shared the consequences of its improper use. They also discussed cyber-crime and ways to protect oneself. Later, they made posters to illustrate their new learning and took a pledge to be watchful users of such interface.
Understanding the importance of a safe internet, the students of classes 5 and 6 engaged in an open discussion about the topic in the classroon. They drew their conceptualised a novel mascot for Safer Internet Day. The concept of Digital Citizenship was taken up in class as well.
Students of classes 7 and 8 were shown an informational video depicting how the internet can be misused and safety measures to be followed while logging in online and surfing the net. Students also discussed their experiences related to internet safety and unethical practices. They encouraged their classmates to be more vigilant while using any application on social platforms.
Technology has mostly proved to be a boon for society. But its proper operation lies in the hands of the beholder. The various funfilled activities conducted in the classroom enabled students to be proactive users and wiser while surfing the internet.
