Since 1967, International Literacy Day celebrations have taken place annually on 8 September around the world, to remind the public at large of the importance of literacy as a matter of dignity and human right. The Indian School-Second Shift observed this day on 6 September 2022 to raise awareness and concern for literacy related problems.
Keeping in mind the theme of the year, "Transforming Literacy Learning Spaces,” various activities were taken up by the students of classes 3 to 5 as an opportunity to rethink the importance of literacy to build resilience and ensure quality education for all.
In class 3, students did a "My Secret Pal Activity" wherein they wrote a letter to a friend in class naming the qualities that they seek and cherish in a friend.
After exchanging the letters, they read them aloud.

This activity helped enhance their thinking, creative writing skills, handwriting, reading and comprehension skills. Not only this, the exercise greatly helped develop a sense of oneness and appreciation for each other.
The students of class 4 made posters on Literacy Day based on the year’s School theme. Through these posters they shared the importance of reading and writing skills for overall development. The students also discussed the significance of the occasion.
The students of class 5 discussed the history and importance of Literacy Day. They also decided to donate books, clothes and distribute food at NGOs located near home. They wrote letters to enhance their writing skills followed by a ‘Read and Share’ activity. They read a book of their choice and shared its values with their peers.
Through these activities, the students were sensitised about the necessity to literate and lettered. They understood that this leads to personal growth.
