Session 2026-27 - 'Migration: Journeys That Shape Us'

Each year, The Indian School - Second Shift selects a theme that runs spirally and synergises the entire School community. The carefully chosen theme offers a curriculum that balances excellence in learning alongside the holistic development of each child. Teachers across various disciplines-whether math, sports, art, dance or language creatively weave this theme into the curriculum during the year. These efforts culminate in a grand magnum opus at the School Annual Day, Annual Exhibition, Jugalbandi and other flagship events.

There has been a lovingly chosen assortment of themes in the years gone by: Latin America, States along the West Coast of India, Africa, States along the East Coast of India, the European Masters, Delhi Meri Jaan, The March of Time, Reclaiming My Planet and most recently, 'I am the Change I Want to See'.

The theme for this year, "Migration: Journeys That Shape Us", invites students to explore one of the most enduring and influential forces in human and natural history. Migration reflects movement of people, cultures, ideas and species and reveals how these journeys transform societies, identities, and environments. It encourages students to understand that movement is often driven by hope, necessity, opportunity or change and that every journey leaves an imprint on both the traveller and the world they enter.

This philosophy highlights how the flow of people and stories across regions contributes to the evolution of communities. It also encourages reflection on the challenges that arise when movement is marked by displacement or uncertainty. By engaging with migration in its many forms, students develop empathy, global awareness and a deeper appreciation of interconnectedness.

Through the theme, we wish to bring together a great fabric of subjects to show how the study of movement - across borders, landscapes and generations reveals the resilience, creativity and adaptability that shape our shared world.

The students shall explore this theme for two years and across all disciplines. It will be the subject of the Environment and Literary Weeks, the Annual Exhibition (art, science and mathematics), the Inter School Competition Jugalbandi and Sports Day.

The students shall delve into the theme through various imaginative and innovative activities. Engaging with the idea of migration will involve examining stories of movement from history and contemporary life, understanding the emotional and social dimensions of journeys and exploring how nature itself adapts through migration. Students will reflect on how movement shapes identity, participate in community engagement activities and explore narratives that broaden their understanding of belonging and change.

Ultimately, by fostering curiosity, empathy, and thoughtful inquiry, this theme becomes a catalyst for deeper awareness-encouraging students to appreciate the journeys of others while reflecting on their own evolving paths.

The School motto. Knowledge is Power, inspires our proud Indianites to become thinking human beings and pioneers in making this world a better place to live
